dotAIRPORT – Domain Names for Airports

The first support statements are in:

About support statements

Background:

dotAIRPORT, LLC will submit an application for the domain extension  ‘.airport’. Internet domain names like ‘www.miami.airport‘, ‘www.lax.airport‘ or ‘www.heathrow.airport‘ will become available to the relevant airports by 2022. Please visit www.dotAIRPORT.com/faq for an executive summary.

We need your support:

The domain extension ‘.airport’ will be applied for with ICANN in 2021. Other entities might be applying for ‘.airport’ as well. There is however a special procedure that grants priority for applications targeting the name of a “community” and having the community’s backing: hence we will apply as a “community priority applicant” for the “airport community”.

A for-profit, commercial applicant who has no ties to the airport industry would operate ‘.airport’ the same way as ‘.com’ is operated today: everybody would get access to ‘.airport’ domain names such as www.miami.airport or www.lax.airport:

  • Fake airport websites (will be better ranked in Google searches and steal more visitors from YOUR official site)

  • Domain squatters and “speculators” (trying to sell the domain to the relevant airport later)

  • Non-Airport-Affiliated services located outside the airport trying to look more “official”:

In order to discourage third parties to apply for the domain suffix ‘.airport’ with ICANN and in order to show case community support for dotAIRPORT, LLC’s public-benefit, non-profit effort we need a letter of support from you:

  • International airports - large and small

  • Any airport with an IATA code

  • Civil aviation airports

  • Airport associations: national or regional

Here how the letter should look like:

Addressed: To the ICANN Board

A short paragraph about who you are. Airport: how many passengers, how many flights, how many destinations. Why your airport is “special”. Associations: Whom you represent, how many members, your mission.

A very short summary of what you understand it is that the dotAIRPORT project is about. Read www.dotAIRPORT.com/faq and extract what you like most about it. Alternatively I can provide you with a suggestion.

Express your concern that a third party that is not affiliated or endorsed by the global airport community might apply for the operation of ‘.airport’ - and that this would incur harm to the airport community. Upon request I can provide you with a suggestion here as well.

Finally the call for action: request the ICANN board to not grant the right to operate ‘.airport’ to any third party that is not affiliated with and supported by the airport industry.
